Macclesfeld Roller Hockey club was founded in late 1995 after Phil Shaw's group of kids who had been playing in Macclesfield's Christ Church car park on sunday mornings joined up with The Hazel Grove based Stockport Shadows Roller hockey team for weekly practices and games at Macclesfield Leisure Centre. The Club began to rapidly expand thanks to a dedicated group of parents. So much so that by the start of the 1997 season teams in 5 age groups were competing in local ball and puck leagues. In 1998, after outgrowing the space at the Leisure Centre, the club moved to its present home, Mulberrys Sports Centre in Alderley Park near Macclesfield. At this time Manchester Storm Star Nick Crawley joined the club taking over professional coaching of the sessions and bolstering club recruitment with the Manchester Storm Roadshow. International success was just round the corner when in 1999 our Junior side the Meltdown became Great Britain National Champions thanks to Nicks coaching and the dedicated management of Pete Moore, going on to represent Great Britain in the European Junior Finals. We repeated our national success at Senior Puck level in 2000 and 2001, even competing in International tournaments across Europe. Many of our players have represented Great Britain in International Competition, and 2 have now gone on to play Professional Ice hockey. Club members have also made appearances on Blue Peter, Granada Tonight, Manchester Live and various local Newspapers.
The Club went from strength to strength into the new millenium led by the Management of Nigel and Bev Palmer, with all our teams: the "Macc-Attack", "Marauders", "Muskateers" "Meltdown" and "Mustangs" competing throughout the North West and beyond thanks to the Sponsorship of Debenhams Department Stores. The Demise of the Storm in 2002 led to a drop in the recruitment of new players though, and the Club retired several of our team names.
Today The club is still managed by an honourary committee including a Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary, Team Managers and nominated committee members. The Club is a non-profitmaking organisation run for the benifit of its members. In its heyday up to the end of 2001, the club had over 100 members, with teams participating in leagues at the Under 10, Under 14, Under 16, under 18, and Senior age groups.
Senior and Under 18s practice sessions are on Friday evenings from 7-9pm. Under 16's and Under 14's squad practice is on Saturday mornings from 11am-1pm each week. The Meltdown Seniors play in the BIPHA Central League out of Virtual Ice Inline at Rotherham as well as the FIHL league out of Deeside arena. The Meltdown Under 16's and 14's compete in the BIPHA North-West league out of Salford University.
